Impaired awareness of hypoglycemia
Sometimes people with type 1 diabetes can’t feel when their blood glucose is getting low. This is called impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (IAH) or hypoglycemia unawareness.
Here are some facts about IAH:

1 in 4 people who have had T1D for 10 years or more also have IAH

Increases the risk of dangerously low blood glucose by 6 times.

IAH happens more often in people who have low blood glucose a lot

Research shows that diabetes technology and specific skills training can help people with IAH. CLEAR is the first study to find out which works better

Is CLEAR for me?

Are you an adult (18-75 years old) with type 1 diabetes?
Do you have trouble feeling when your blood glucose is low?
Have you lost the symptoms you used to feel when your blood glucose is low?

If YES, CLEAR may be for you.
The study will test different ways to help people feel symptoms and know when their blood glucose is low again.

What does the CLEAR study involve?

324 Adults with T1D in the US, UK, and Australia.

Participants will be in the study for 2-2.5 years

You will be compensated for your time and effort
Participants will test methods to reduce the problem of IAH. This might include use of diabetes technology and/or programs to improve ability to recognize symptoms.

Benefits of Taking Part

  • Access new tools that can help you notice when your blood glucose is low.
  • Work with researchers to find the best ways to reduce IAH.
  • New information about IAH will be learnt which may benefit people living with T1D.
  • You will be reimbursed for time and study-related costs (to be discussed with the study team).
